“Intellectual
property” – is a
general definition for rights related to intangible “products”, produced by
human intellect (hence the term Intellectual Property, or in short – IP).
Intellectual
Property is considered one of the most important fields for any self-respecting
company.
Many globally
renowned international companies go to great lengths to preserve their
Intellectual Property, as they have invested many resources therein, and if the
Intellectual Property leaks to another party and/or to the competition, this
may adversely influence the company’s stability and in some extreme cases the
entire future existence of the company.
Intellectual
Property is divided into a number of categories as follows:
·
“Copyrights” – deals with literary, dramatic, musical
and artistic creations.
·
“Registered industrial design” – the registered
industrial design is the outline, ornament or decoration applied in connection
with a certain product – the design aspect, such as the jewel design of a known
company.
·
“Plant Breeder’s Rights” – a type of intellectual
property granting a monopoly to utilize a sub-specie of plant to the person who
bred it.
·
“Patents” – a patent is an exclusive usage right
granted by the state to the owner of an invention to use his invention for an
allotted period of time, whether it is a product or a process in any
technological field.
·
“Trademarks” – a trademark is a symbol used by a
company or private person for commercial needs. This symbol can be the product
name, logo, etc.
·
“Trade secrets” – a trade secret is business
information which is not public knowledge and which cannot be easily discovered
by others. Its secrecy grants its owners an advantage over the competition and
the investment of reasonable efforts is required to keep it a secret.
